Auto Dealers Predict Greater Profit Margins with Sales of XENON Lighting as Standard Safety Equipment New Study Predicts that Enhanced XENON Sales Training and On-Lot Availability Will Contribute to Greater Profits HILLSBORO, N.H., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study finds that automotive dealers who use XENON or High Intensity Discharge headlights as a selling feature stand to increase profits with the sale of this technology. Increased profit margins are probable if the lighting technology is sold as standard equipment, and it is effectively positioned as a safety benefit to a wider range of drivers. These findings stem from new research conducted by Brand-Aid Consulting of Wrentham, Mass. Brand-Aid polled automotive sales people at new car dealerships that sell XENON equipped vehicles in the US. The study reveals that sales staffs' awareness of XENON lighting's advantages is high. They also show that, when offered as standard equipment, sales staff have little difficulty for making the case that more light on the road makes for safer night time driving. When XENON headlamps are not standard equipment, however, the study shows both challenges and opportunities in selling the technology and its benefits. Current Challenges Almost half of the sales people (48 percent) responded that they have not received formal training on XENON headlights. Forty six percent confirm that this leaves them without answers to some of the more challenging questions consumers can pose. "The report has shown us that OSRAM SYLVANIA needs to support our OE customers in the development of training programs and tools that allow dealership sales staff to promote the benefits of XENON technology to all customers," said Matt Blewett, XENON Product Manager at OSRAM SYLVANIA. On-lot availability of XENON-equipped vehicles is also hindering consideration. Just under half (45 percent) of sales people queried do not try to up-sell XENON when offered as an option because there are few cars available with the technology, coupled with the pressure to sell in-stock vehicles. The fact that XENON headlights are often bundled with other optional equipment packages is also seen as a barrier by sales staff, with 71 percent stating they would be more successful in selling XENON headlights if sold as a 'stand alone' option. Opportunities: Selling Safety Where dealers anticipate success in selling HID lighting is in its repositioning as a safety technology. Ninety-seven percent of those polled said explaining the technology's safety benefits, versus a luxury or styling feature, will help broaden XENON's appeal in an already safety-conscious market. "We've long touted the various safety attributes of XENON lighting," said Blewett. "The technology provides its owners with 70 percent more light on the road, increasing visibility of many peripheral objects left in the shadows by standard halogen lighting. XENON provides the best illumination available and is considered the benchmark against which other forward lighting technologies are measured." According to OSRAM SYLVANIA, annual US sales of XENON equipped vehicles have well surpassed the one million mark. The full potential, however, based on car models for which XENON tooling has already been developed, puts this number at just under four million units. Establishing these sales would generate additional dealership revenue of approximately $500 per vehicle. At the same time, this will allow the manufacturers to better profit from their XENON tooling investments. As dealerships and manufactures benefit financially, consumers win through greater access to lighting technology that enhances safety. "Repositioning XENON as a safety technology will allow these headlights to be applied to more mainstream vehicles. While dealerships prefer XENON to be sold as a stand alone option, the study confirms that if XENON is to be bundled, it belongs with other safety enhancing features," said Blewett. "When dealerships have XENON equipped vehicles on their lot, tools and trained personnel to promote them, informed customers will stand to benefit strongly. But the dealers need to initiate the conversation." Scion Announces Pricing for 2008 tC TORRANCE, Calif., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Scion, of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., announced pricing today for the 2008 tC sports coupe and tC Spec Package models. The 2008 tC and tC Spec Package will be available at dealerships next month. The core model tC receives freshened styling, new standard equipment and safety features for 2008. Exterior changes include a new upper mesh grille, lattice lower grille, projector-type low beam headlights with black trim, and rear tail lights similar in style to the tC's headlights with round combination lamps. The tC also receives a deep orange combination meter on the instrument panel, silver-colored accents on the door assist grips and center cluster, updated seat fabric and a Pioneer subwoofer located under the cargo area. Like all 2008 Scion models, the tC comes standard with seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, and two complimentary factory- recommended maintenance services, at 5,000 and 10,000 miles, at any Scion or Toyota dealer. The factory recommended maintenance includes an oil change, a tire rotation, a visual brake inspection, and the topping off of washer fluid. Apple iPod connectivity becomes standard on all 2008 Scion models. Scion's standard 160-watt maximum output Pioneer AM/FM/CD audio system features a head unit with iPod control. This head unit integrates track, artist and album information from the iPod into a one-line display on the head unit's screen. Murphy, Chairman of the Governors Highway Safety Association WASHINGTON, May 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Last Friday, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) released its 2006 Preliminary Estimate of Highway Fatalities. The data indicates that in 2006 there were 43,330 deaths overall, compared to 43,443 in 2005. While we are always pleased to see a decline, far too many people continue to lose their lives in preventable traffic crashes. The report offers a few signs for optimism. We are very pleased that injuries are projected down by six percent, likely in part due to an increase in safety belt use. In fact, nonfatal crashes are projected below six million for the first time. Fatalities from large truck crashes dropped by 3.7 percent and pedestrians deaths also made a slight decline. I am particularly concerned that motorcycle fatalities have increased for the ninth straight year and show no sign of easing. To help reduce these fatalities, GHSA urges states to adopt a comprehensive motorcycle safety program including mandatory helmet laws. It's frustrating that only Louisiana has enacted a helmet law in the past decade. Only twenty states have these common sense laws. It is high-time for action on this issue. GHSA members are also troubled that alcohol-related fatalities increased 2.4 percent. This is particularly disheartening given that late last summer GHSA, along with our partners, NHTSA and MADD, launched the most ambitious drunk driving enforcement campaign ever. While enforcement and prevention remain critical in reducing drunk driving, technology may lead to significant new reductions. GHSA urges every state to require alcohol interlock devices for all first-time offenders. Through enforcement, prevention and technology, we can turn this tragic trend around. State Highway Safety Offices also report that excessive speeding by motorists has reduced the expected gains in lives saved by historically high seat belt use. State studies as well as those by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicate that motorists are driving at record speeds, well above posted limits. GHSA is committed to working closely with NHTSA and other partners to bring the issue to the forefront of the national highway safety agenda. A critical component to address all of these behavioral highway safety problems are primary seat belt laws. Passage of such a law results in a state's safety belt use rate rising 8-12 percentage points which translates into hundreds of lives saved. I congratulate Alaska, Kentucky, Maine and Mississippi for recently enacting these laws and urge the other 24 states without primary seat belt laws to quickly follow suit. Along with passing these laws, high-visibility enforcement campaigns are key to increasing safety belt use. Congratulations to Washington state for achieving a 96.3 statewide usage rate in 2006 -- the highest in the nation. The preliminary figures offer some positives but also raise some alarms. The larger gap in financial performances of the Detroit-based and Japan- based automakers reflect domestic companies' higher incentive costs, legacy costs and their slower response to shifts in consumer choices more than any large competitive disadvantage on their factory floors. "Improving productivity in the face of lower production is a huge accomplishment, but none of the domestic manufacturers can afford to let up," said Ron Harbour, president of Harbour Consulting. "General Motors essentially caught Toyota in vehicle assembly productivity. Considering that they will be building vehicles in 2007 with dramatically fewer hourly employees in the U.S., GM, Ford and Chrysler likely will reduce their hours per vehicle significantly." The UAW and CAW were more proactive in 2006 than ever before in creating a more competitive environment among the companies whose hourly workers they represent. Chrysler, General Motors and, especially Ford, negotiated more flexible local labor agreements prior to this summer's pivotal national talks with the UAW. However, they must go further to overcome their persistent health care and pension cost disadvantage vs. Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Restrictive labor agreements that create cost disadvantages still exist and could jeopardize the survival of certain automakers. The difference between the most and least productive in terms of total (Assembly, Stamping and Powertrain) labor hours was 5.17 hours per vehicle (or about $300 per vehicle), down from 7.33 hours per vehicle in 2005, and less than one-third the 17.17 HPV gap in 1998. This year, Honda's showed the biggest improvement (2.7%) across this combined assembly, stamping and powertrain measure. In overall productivity, four of the six companies with assembly, stamping and powertrain operations in North America -- GM, Honda, Chrysler and Ford -- showed improvement in 2006. Nissan Motor Co. did not participate in this year's report. Toyota's total manufacturing hours per vehicle, while leading the way among the participating companies at 29.93 HPV, was not as strong as its 2005 performance of 29.40. Honda was second at 31.63 HPV. Among vehicle assembly plants, GM's Oshawa #2 plant, which assembles the Pontiac Grand Prix, Buick LaCrosse and Buick Allure, set the individual plant benchmark for labor productivity with a measure of 15.68 hours per vehicle, followed closely by its adjoining Oshawa #1 plant that produces the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, Oshawa #1 posted a 16.34 HPV performance. "GM Oshawa historically has had one of the best work forces of any assembly plant in the industry and the data proves that," Harbour said. "The total site builds 20% of GM's North American volume and does it well." The Harbour Report(TM), the auto industry authority on manufacturing efficiency first published in 1989, measures assembly, stamping and powertrain productivity performances -- plant by plant, and company by company -- for North American automotive manufacturers. The labor hours per vehicle measure calculates the total salary and hourly labor content required to produce one vehicle. This year's Harbour Report(TM) provides an even broader assessment of factories, adding Volkswagen's Puebla, Mexico, plant; General Motors' new Delta Township assembly plant near Lansing, Mich.; and Toyota's plant in Baja, Mexico. DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors still have a wider variation in capacity utilization among their assembly plants, while they continue to work on plant flexibility. By closing plants in the next two years, all three domestics should see improvement on capacity utilization. Others, such as Toyota, which had its assembly plants running between 95% and 108% of capacity, are leveraging their design, engineering and manufacturing organizations to increase flexibility and use common parts and processes. The other differentiator is profitability. Toyota and Honda each earned a pre-tax margin of more than $1,200 on every vehicle they sold in North America. In contrast, Chrysler Group lost $1,072, while General Motors lost $1,436 and Ford lost $5,234 on each vehicle sold in 2006. This reflects a variety of factors, including the large difference in health care and pension costs, lower average revenue, as well as higher costs of rebates and low-interest rate financing required to trim inventories. Other highlights from this year's Assembly, Stamping and Powertrain chapters include: Vehicle Assembly Honda led all multi-plant companies in assembly performance with 21.13 hours per vehicle, but CAMI Automotive, which produces the Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent and Suzuki XL-7 in Ingersoll, Ontario, achieved a 17.85 HPV and the New United Motors Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) plant in Fremont, Calif., posted an impressive 19.34 HPV. General Motors had four of the 10 most productive assembly plants: Oshawa #2 (15.68 HPV for Pontiac Grand Prix, Buick LaCrosse and Allure); Oshawa #1 (16.34 HPV for Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo); Fairfax, Kan, (17.89 HPV for Chevrolet Malibu and Saturn Aura); and Lordstown, Ohio (19.17 HPV for Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and Pursuit). Toyota's Georgetown #2 plant, which produces the Camry and Solara, ranked 10th with 19.77 HPV, an impressive feat considering that it launched the new Camry and the Camry Hybrid during 2006. Overall, Toyota's assembly performance declined 3.3% from 2005. Despite a 13% increase in North American sales Toyota's North American production volume actually declined 4% at the five assembly plants participating in The Harbour Report(TM) North America. Ford led in five segments: compact non-premium SUV (Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner/Kansas City #1), mid-size non-premium conventional car (Ford Taurus/Atlanta), large premium pickup (Lincoln Mark LT/Dearborn), mid-size non-premium crossover (Ford Freestyle/Chicago) and large premium sports car (Ford GT/Wixom). Chrysler led in two segments: mid-size non-premium van (Dodge Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country/Windsor) and mid-size non-premium SUV (Jeep Grand Cherokee/Jefferson North). Stamping Harbour uses a stamping index that weighs each of several labor and equipment measures in a process that creates a composite score of stamping productivity. On that basis, Honda's Marysville stamping shop ranked first, followed by Toyota Georgetown, Toyota Cambridge and Honda East Liberty. Of the 10 best stamping plants, Toyota had three; Honda, two; DaimlerChrysler, two; and Ford, General Motors and NUMMI, one each. "In 2006 Honda was the best stamper, on balance, in the industry," said Harbour. "It is not a matter of spending more than competitors. It reflects regular kaizen improvement activities and the flexibility that comes with well coordinated engineering and manufacturing." Powertrain Four of the six largest companies improved engine productivity when comparing plants that were included in last year's report. Toyota still led the field at 2.85 HPE. Honda finished second at 3.34 HPE while GM was a close third at 3.44 HPE. GM's Spring Hill 4-cylinder engine lines turned in the best performance by an engine plant at 2.27 hours per engine, edging out Toyota's Buffalo, W.Va., plant (2.29 HPE), which had captured the top spot for five straight years. The Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance plant in Dundee, Mich., finished a respectable third in its first year participating with 2.68 hours per engine. GM had four engine plants in the top 10. Chrysler maintained the lead it assumed last year over GM and Ford in transmission productivity, improving to 3.39 HPT from 3.55, while GM came in at 3.68 and Ford came in at 3.75 HPT. For the second time in the last four years GM's Toledo plant led all plants producing rear-wheel drive transmissions (2.54 hours per transmission) and was the No. 1 plant overall. Chrysler Kokomo had the best productivity measure among producers of front- wheel-drive transmissions (A604 line) at 3.52 HPT. Safety Inside The C70 comes standard with Volvo's newest addition to side impact protection, the Inflatable Curtain (IC), "As there are no roof members to which the curtain can be attached it is mounted in the door," noted Skogsmo. "When activated it is directed upwards." The curtain has an extra stiff construction with double rows of slats that are slightly offset from each other. This allows them to remain upright and offer effective head protection even with the window open. The curtain also deflates slowly to provide protection should the car roll over. The inflatable curtain interacts with the seat belt pretensioners to help provide maximum protection for the front seat occupants in a side impact or a rollover accident. The Volvo system for avoiding neck injuries -- WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) -- is one of the most effective on the market and is also standard in the all-new Volvo C70. The three-piece steering column is designed to pivot up and collapse away from the driver through the use of a pyrotechnically charged separation bolt. The C70 has a unique front energy absorbing structure that uses three additional grades of steel aside from the regular bodywork steel: High Strength Steel, Extra High Strength Steel and Ultra High Strength Steel. When combined in different structural elements, the C70 maintains excellent low- and high-speed deformation as witnessed by the Institutes' frontal crash testing. The all-new Volvo C70 is designed to provide effective protection in the event of a rear-end collision as well. The rear longitudinal members deform in a controlled way. They are linked to the body sills to distribute the collision forces forward into the body structure. A large horseshoe-shaped member behind the rear seats and a double metal wall behind the backrests contribute to reducing the risk of intrusion into the passenger compartment. If the top is stowed in the down position, it works together with the double wall to absorb the collision forces. TrueDelta.com Releases Reliability Results for the Quarter Ending March 31, 2007 First Online Reliability Stats on Two New, 2007 Models WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Truedelta.com, the new automotive website that provides fast, accurate vehicle reliability, pricing and fuel economy information has announced the latest results of its Vehicle Reliability Survey (VRS.) The results capture owner experiences through the end of March 2007 and reflect TrueDelta's ability to provide car buyers with reliability information in a more timely manner than competitors. The results also include reliability data that is freely available to the public for the first time on two, new-for 2007 models: the Nissan Versa and Saturn Aura. "Others won't have reliability information on those models available until November," explained Michael Karesh, developer of TrueDelta.com. "Over the course of the year, TrueDelta's data will average more than ten months ahead of others, and we think access to fresh reliability data is important to consumers considering the purchase of a new car." Results Show Margins of Difference Because most reliability information is generally reported in terms of relative ratings, the actual sizes of differences can be unclear and what can appear to be a significant difference is often minor in reality. "As a result, people often tend to think vehicles require more repairs than they actually do," says Karesh. TrueDelta.com reports reliability as an absolute number -- or VRS score -- based on repair trips per year and as these results demonstrate, the variance between models is often very slim. The most reliable models achieve about a 0.6 VRS score. This means a group of ten cars would likely require six repair trips in a given year. In comparison, the least reliable models achieve about a 1.0 VRS score. Statistically, this means a group of ten cars would likely require ten repair trips for the year. "So, while one can say that from "best" to "worst", the repair rate roughly quadruples, the reality is that we're only talking about the chances of requiring a single repair trip in a given year, " Karesh explained. By using an absolute number, TrueDelta presents a far more accurate view of repair rates and as the quarterly reliability data shows, the difference in vehicle reliability between models is very narrow. Initial Nissan Versa and Saturn Aura Data In TrueDelta tracks and updates reliability data quarterly. This allows results for early, new-model introductions to be presented as much as ten months earlier than TrueDelta's competitors. The Nissan Versa and Saturn Aura are two such models. Initial results for the Nissan Versa indicate a relatively high repair rate of about a 1.1 VRS score. One common, minor failure was largely responsible. The Saturn Aura fared better with about a 0.6 VRS score for a range of minor problems. In practical terms, this means that for every ten Versas, there could be ten trips to a repair facility within a year, compared to six trips for every ten Auras. "Such initial problems are not uncommon with new models," explained Karesh. "TrueDelta has observed steady declines in the repair rates for some new models as manufacturers make running changes to address common issues. For example, six months ago another vehicle in the survey scored a 1.1 VRS and in the latest results, improved to 0.6 VRS." With TrueDelta's quarterly updates, any changes in a model's reliability are captured and reported with the results for the quarter in which the change occurred. TrueDelta's next quarterly update through June 30, 2007 will be announced in August. In the event of a powerful rear-end collision the backrests and head restraints in the front seats follow the movements of the seat occupant's body. The three-piece steering column is designed to pivot up and collapse away from the driver through the use of a pyrotechnically charged separation bolt. This helps to better position the air bag deployment process for pending contact with driver. All four seating positions feature pyrotechnically pretensioned seat belts with a spool-out function. Not only will this new system help restrain the user, it allows for slower forward acceleration of the human body. Safety Outside First seen on the Volvo S40 sport sedan, the C70 continues the use of utilizing different grades of steel to helps control impact energy in the event of a collision. The C70 has a unique front energy absorbing structure that uses three additional grades of steel aside from the regular bodywork steel: High Strength Steel, Extra High Strength Steel and Ultra High Strength Steel. When combined in different structural elements, the C70 maintains excellent low- and high-speed deformation as witnessed by the Institutes' frontal crash testing. The all-new Volvo C70 is designed to provide effective protection in the event of a rear-end collision as well. The rear longitudinal members deform in a controlled way. They are linked to the body sills to distribute the collision forces forward into the body structure. A large horseshoe-shaped member behind the rear seats and a double metal wall behind the backrests contribute to reducing the risk of intrusion into the passenger compartment. If the top is stowed in the down position, it works together with the double wall to absorb the collision forces. The Rollover Protection System (ROPS) popup bars are also pushed upwards in the event of a rear-end collision. The aim is to reduce the risk of the passengers being hit by flying objects from the car behind. Volvo's Convertible Safety Heritage Volvo's first C70 Convertible arrived in 1998 with an impressive array of safety systems. It was the first use of Ultra-High Strength Steel (UHSS) to strengthen selected structural elements. UHSS would later migrate into the XC90 SUV and into subsequent vehicles. "We found this material to be extremely hard, fatigue resistant and added protection without adding significantly to vehicle weight," states Skogsmo. UHSS was used to strengthen the 'A' pillar, and when combined with a High Strength Steel tube insert, the 'A' pillar could support the vehicle weight during most types of roll-over accidents. This first C70 also featured a unique three-piece steering column, pyrotechnic pretensioned front seat belts, Side Impact Protection system which featured used of UHSS in the 'B' pillar area, Side Impact Air Bags, and Rollover Protection pop-up roll bars.
