Unitrin Direct Enters the Kentucky Auto Insurance Derby

Unitrin Direct Enters the Kentucky Auto Insurance Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Unitrin Direct, an auto insurance company that combines affordable coverage with a high-level of customer service, has been approved to do business in Kentucky, which could mean significant savings for the state's nearly three million licensed drivers.

Kentucky is the 23rd state where auto insurance has been made available by Unitrin Direct, a company with a proven history of saving its customers money and an A (excellent) rating by A.M. Best. Drivers who switch to Unitrin Direct from another carrier pay an average of $303 less for their coverage.*

"We've received an overwhelming response from people across the country who are thrilled with our low car insurance rates and outstanding customer service, and we're excited to bring that to Kentucky," said Tom Mercer, vice president, marketing. "This is a great opportunity for Kentucky drivers to comparison shop and see how much they could be saving on their auto insurance."

Using the latest communications technology, including newly installed Avaya and Tealeaf systems, Unitrin Direct has streamlined the process of getting either an online auto insurance quote or a phone quote from a licensed agent. By logging on to http://www.unitrindirect.com/ or calling (800) 642-5254, customers can find out in less than 10 minutes how much they might be able to save.

"One of our biggest priorities is to eliminate the hoops that customers normally have to jump through to get a lower rate," said Brian Crumbaker, senior vice president, operations and claims. "Unitrin Direct's technological upgrades make shopping for auto insurance faster and easier than ever."

Along with savings and convenience, Unitrin Direct also prides itself in giving customers easy access to help when they need it. With that in mind, the company has invested heavily in information technology. If policyholders are in an accident, they'll have a personal claims representative assigned to them to coordinate each and every detail of their claim so they can get back on the road quickly.

"Low rates don't prevent us from providing friendly, hands-on service," Mercer said. "That's one of the big advantages of our direct business model."

Unitrin Direct is offering new discounts for Kentucky residents, including up to a $75 break for buying their car insurance online and further savings for paying in full at the time the policy is purchased.

"We know that saving money is of great importance to anybody looking for car insurance," said Shaun McGovern, Kentucky product director for Unitrin Direct. "Our goal is to make driving in Kentucky more affordable."

SiRF GPS IP Powers New Renesas Automotive System on Chip

SiRF GPS IP Powers New Renesas Automotive System on Chip

Enables OEMs to Create Higher Integration, In-Dash Navigation and Telematics Systems More Quickly and at Lower Cost

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SiRF Technology Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:SIRF), a leading provider of GPS-enabled silicon and premium software location platforms, today announced Renesas Technology Corp. has licensed SiRF GPS baseband IP blocks to location-enable its new SuperH(TM) Family SH7775, an SoC (system on chip) solution designed for high-performance car information systems (CIS). With its embedded SiRF GPS capabilities, the Renesas SH7775 will provide automotive OEMs and their Tier-1 suppliers worldwide with a solid foundation for building the next generation of affordable in-dash navigation, telematics and auto information systems, and offers SiRF entry into the lucrative automotive market in Japan and elsewhere through its partnership with that country's leading in-vehicle platform supplier.

The SiRF IP solution delivers superior GPS performance for automotive applications, and achieves significant system cost savings through greater integration and by making optimum use of the SH7775's SuperH RISC engine and memory resources. Along with a standalone SiRF GRF3i+ radio frequency subsystem IC, the embedded SiRF GPS technology handles all the time-critical aspects of obtaining location measurements from the GPS satellites, and passes the raw positioning data to SiRFNav GPS software running on the SH-4A processor core. SiRF will directly provide the RF subsystem and system-level integration support to automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers to ensure successful integration of the Renesas SH7775 solution into their products, maintain compatibility and interoperability of the GPS and other host platform functions and obtain optimal GPS performance.

"From a strategic perspective, our partnership with Renesas is important because it provides us with an opportunity to significantly enhance our market position in the in-car navigation and telematics systems and to gain critical insights into future market needs and trends," said Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of marketing for SiRF. "Automotive OEMs and their Tier-1 suppliers can now have the market proven GPS technology integrated in a cost- effective automotive system platform from the two market leaders with a worldwide support infrastructure."

Chadha noted that today's announcement is part of a natural progression of a deepening relationship between SiRF and Renesas Automotive Business Unit. In October 2004, SiRF announced it was chosen by Renesas as the GPS technology provider to location-enable the COMET(TM) Biscayne automotive telematics platform, bringing world-class, host-based GPS capabilities to the COMET reference design. Currently, SiRF is also a member of the SH-Navi Consortium, a resource group developed by Renesas to help automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers find solutions to CIS software development problems and encourage partnerships between the companies involved in the CIS market.

"SiRF is an important global technology partner, and their leading position in the worldwide GPS market will be an essential competitive advantage for us as we seek additional business opportunities outside of Japan, especially in North America and Europe, and the emerging markets in Asia," said Tsutomu Miki, general manager, automotive semiconductor business unit at Renesas Technology Corp. "By partnering with SiRF, we are able to deliver to our customers a highly robust and cost-optimized GPS solution ideally suited to creating fully integrated navigation and telematics systems for mainstream automotive applications."

Renesas SH7775 SoC customers will also have the option of employing SiRF's tightly coupled dead-reckoning software option, SiRFDrive, for vehicle applications requiring continuous and highly accurate position information in all environments. Replacing the standard SiRFNav software, SiRFDrive software combines GPS and dead reckoning measurements to provide continuous and accurate navigation in even the most challenging operating environments, such as in covered parking lots, tunnels and in urban canyons. This dead reckoning data optimizes and cross-checks the GPS function, resulting in the most accurate location solution available today for automotive applications.

The Renesas SH7775 SoC incorporates the SuperH Family's top-end SH-4A CPU core capable of 1-GIPS and 4.2-GFLOPS processing performance, and integrates many comprehensive peripheral functions required by car navigation systems. In addition to the SiRF GPS baseband processing capabilities, these include a newly developed graphics engine optimized for map drawing, a 3D graphics engine for high-level drawing processing, an ATAPI interface, a USB v2.0 host/function interface and a CAN in-vehicle LAN interface.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Chrysler Group has improved its overall manufacturing productivity by an industry-leading 25 percent over the last six years, according to the Harbour Report North America 2007. The company has improved its overall hours per vehicle (HPV) time by 2.4 percent to 32.90 for the 2006 calendar year.

The annual Harbour Report is a broadly accepted measure of productivity in the automotive industry. Nearly all major manufacturers participate in the survey. According to Ron Harbour, President - Harbour Consulting, Chrysler Group's manufacturing productivity is supported by numerous improvements throughout the company.

"Improving productivity in the face of lower production is a huge accomplishment, but none of the domestic manufacturers can afford to let up," said Ron Harbour , president of Harbour Consulting. "Chrysler's 19 percent reduction in total manufacturing hours per vehicle over the last five years is the biggest improvement of the six largest North American automakers over that period. The challenge now is to take that progress to the next level."

Among the highlights for the Chrysler Group, eight assembly plants ranked within the top five of their segment for productivity improvements. Windsor Assembly was North America's most productive minivan plant and St. Louis South, second. For the midsize SUV segment, Jefferson North Assembly took both first place for the Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee and fifth for the Jeep Commander; Toledo North, home of the Dodge Nitro ranked second place and third for Jeep Liberty; Newark Assembly ranked second for the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen in the large utility segments; Brampton Assembly ranked fifth for the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum in the large - non-premium conventional segment; Warren Truck ranked fifth for the Mitsubishi Raider in the midsize - non-premium pick-up segment and Toledo Supplier Park ranked second for Wrangler in the compact non-premium SUV segment.

"The Company continues to be on task to reach its goal of world-class productivity by end of 2007," said Frank Ewasyshyn, Executive Vice President Manufacturing, Chrysler Group. "We are pleased to have made productivity gains during a 10-vehicle launch year, the most significant new-vehicle introduction in Chrysler Group history."

Powertrain

The company's transmission plants continue to be the industry leader with a 4.2 percent improvement - to 3.39 hours per transmission. Eight Chrysler Group Powertrain plants scored at the top of their segment.

GEMA, Dundee - 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.4L four cylinder (Ranked third among all engine plants) 2.68 HPE

Kokomo Transmission Plant - W5A580 rear-wheel drive automatic transmission (Ranked second among all transmission plants)

Kokomo Transmission Plant - front-wheel drive automatic transmission (Ranked highest among all FWD transmission plants) 3.52 HPT

Stamping

Chrysler Group also demonstrated expertise in stamping operations with a five percent improvement year-over-year in hours per vehicle based upon parts- per labor hour. Additionally, Toluca (Mexico) Assembly plant, home of the Chrysler PT Cruiser and PT Cruiser convertible and Belividere (Ill.), home of the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot, were among the top-10 stamping plants - the highest for a domestic manufacturer.

The company is deploying a number of initiatives intended to continue improving manufacturing excellence in the future. Among them are increased support of assembly employees, continued employee training and new workplace practices that are designed to foster greater creativity and innovation among employees on the plant floor. The company has also redesigned material handling operations and employee work stations to improve productivity and maintain high quality levels.

The Harbour Report is one of several measures the Chrysler Group uses to evaluate its manufacturing operations. Other areas that are tracked by the company include safety, quality, delivery, cost and morale, all of which contribute to manufacturing performance.

ZAP CEO Holds Electric Car Meetings in Europe, Middle East

ZAP CEO Holds Electric Car Meetings in Europe, Middle East

SANTA ROSA, Calif., May 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Steve Schneider, CEO for transportation pioneer ZAP (OTC BB: ZAAP), recently held business meetings in Europe and The Middle East and says demand for electric cars is growing globally.

(Logo:

http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070130/SFTU060LOGO )

"In the Middle East, where you would think people have all the oil they need, ZAP has received a tremendous amount of interest for all-electric cars," said Schneider. "When you see the incentives places like Europe are giving to create electric car sales, it feels like the United States has fallen behind."

ZAP's CEO Schneider is traveling again this week to expand on new business developments and follow up on new ones that are developing rapidly. Schneider will be joined this trip by former United Airlines Shuttle President Amos S. Kazzaz who joined ZAP recently as Chief Operating Officer. The two have visits scheduled in Holland, Portugal, Denmark and the United Kingdom.

Schneider is meeting with companies and individuals representing almost every aspect of automotive development, design, manufacturing and distribution. Part of the trip is to build on existing relationships with companies like PML FlightLink Limited of Hampshire, United Kingdom, makers of a proprietary wheel motor technology.

"After evaluating motor technology from around the world, in my opinion this technology is a more significant breakthrough than the battery technology," said Schneider. He notes the efficiency of PML's motor system and how it can translate into greater regenerative braking, not to mention its state-of-the-art, space-saving ability that inspires innovation throughout the vehicle.

Schneider issued praise to some of the countries he visited for creating electric car incentives. London has created a congestion zone where it charges a modest toll for gas cars, but allows electric cars to pass free. In Holland, Schneider estimated that taxes on conventional cars are nearly 50 percent, but electric cars are exempt; Denmark, where taxes are as much as 150 percent, electric cars are exempt.

In January ZAP signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Lithium Balance of Denmark for an advanced battery management system for electric cars.

Volkswagen Named Official Vehicle of SCORE International and the SCORE Desert Race Series

Volkswagen Named Official Vehicle of SCORE International and the SCORE Desert Race Series

Volkswagen's Legendary Desert Racing Lineage on Display This Weekend at Tecate SCORE Baja 500

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. has announced a multi-year partnership with SCORE International to become the Official Vehicle of SCORE and the six-race SCORE Desert series.

The official announcement was made at the pre-race press conference for this Saturday's 39th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500, the third race in the 2007 series. Volkswagen and SCORE officials were on hand to make the announcement.

"With its rich history, Volkswagen has made tremendous contributions to the sport of desert racing, both nationally and internationally, and we're excited with the opportunity to partner with a legendary racing series such as SCORE," said Clark Campbell, Volkswagen of America Motorsport manager. "We are looking forward to our official involvement in the racing series as both a sponsor and active participant."

"Volkswagen was the first "official" vehicle of SCORE International and we think it's fitting due to their vehicles' history along with their successes on both the local and international circuit," said Sal Fish, president and CEO of SCORE International. "Volkswagens and those amazing air-cooled VW engines are part of the foundation of desert racing and to have this world-renown automaker reach out in this manner is a tribute to the thousands of VWs and VW-powered vehicles that have been such an integral part of our sport."

The Volkswagen Thing had a strong presence in the first three years (1973-75) of SCORE's racing series, paving the way for a number of strong future finishes by Volkswagen products, in a number of categorical divisions.

This weekend, for the first time ever, Volkswagen is fielding two official entries from its famous Dakar Rally Factory Team. The two turbo-diesel Volkswagen Race Touareg 2's will compete in a special SCORE International Truck Class, starting between the SCORE Trophy Truck and Class 1 vehicles. The Race Touareg 2s will be driven by American Mark Miller and South African Giniel de Villers. Miller, who has won the SCORE Trophy-Truck class twice in the SCORE Baja 500, was fourth overall in this year's Dakar Rally while de Villers won four stages in the rally and finished 11th overall.

The Race Touareg 2, powered by a 2.5 liter, inline five cylinder TDI engine with a two-stage intercooled turbocharger, produces 285 horsepower and 440 ft. lbs of torque. The engine is positioned longitudinally behind the front suspension and sends its power to a six-speed sequential race gearbox. A permanent four-wheel drive system featuring three mechanical differentials with viscous locking is used to provide superior traction.

In addition, SCORE International officials have announced that:

* Unofficial checkpoint passing times will be posted on

www.score-international.com during this weekend's 39th Annual Tecate
SCORE Baja 500. With technology developed by RallyTrack.com of
Lakewood, Calif., each of the four official SCORE checkpoints in the
race will be supplied a specially-designed, rugged satellite
communications system to relay the unofficial passing time of every
vehicle, by class, to SCORE Operations as well as posting the data on
the SCORE website. The RallyTrack.com computer system expects to update
the data on the SCORE website approximately every 10 minutes. The data
will also be posted in the finish line area of the race.

* SCORE International and SCORE Radio, in association with Blue C
Communications has launched a 90 minute, bi-weekly show available
online. The show, with hosts Cameron Steele and Sal Fish, is designed
to be the direct source of information, race updates and interviews for
the SCORE Desert racing community. For more information or to check
out the premier episode, visit www.score-radio.com, or go to

Auto Dealers Predict Greater Profit Margins with Sales of XENON Lighting as Standard Safety Equipment

Auto Dealers Predict Greater Profit Margins with Sales of XENON Lighting as Standard Safety Equipment

New Study Predicts that Enhanced XENON Sales Training and On-Lot Availability Will Contribute to Greater Profits

HILLSBORO, N.H., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study finds that automotive dealers who use XENON or High Intensity Discharge headlights as a selling feature stand to increase profits with the sale of this technology. Increased profit margins are probable if the lighting technology is sold as standard equipment, and it is effectively positioned as a safety benefit to a wider range of drivers.

These findings stem from new research conducted by Brand-Aid Consulting of Wrentham, Mass. Brand-Aid polled automotive sales people at new car dealerships that sell XENON equipped vehicles in the US.

The study reveals that sales staffs' awareness of XENON lighting's advantages is high. They also show that, when offered as standard equipment, sales staff have little difficulty for making the case that more light on the road makes for safer night time driving. When XENON headlamps are not standard equipment, however, the study shows both challenges and opportunities in selling the technology and its benefits.

Current Challenges

Almost half of the sales people (48 percent) responded that they have not received formal training on XENON headlights. Forty six percent confirm that this leaves them without answers to some of the more challenging questions consumers can pose.

"The report has shown us that OSRAM SYLVANIA needs to support our OE customers in the development of training programs and tools that allow dealership sales staff to promote the benefits of XENON technology to all customers," said Matt Blewett, XENON Product Manager at OSRAM SYLVANIA.

On-lot availability of XENON-equipped vehicles is also hindering consideration. Just under half (45 percent) of sales people queried do not try to up-sell XENON when offered as an option because there are few cars available with the technology, coupled with the pressure to sell in-stock vehicles.

The fact that XENON headlights are often bundled with other optional equipment packages is also seen as a barrier by sales staff, with 71 percent stating they would be more successful in selling XENON headlights if sold as a 'stand alone' option.

Opportunities: Selling Safety

Where dealers anticipate success in selling HID lighting is in its repositioning as a safety technology. Ninety-seven percent of those polled said explaining the technology's safety benefits, versus a luxury or styling feature, will help broaden XENON's appeal in an already safety-conscious market.

"We've long touted the various safety attributes of XENON lighting," said Blewett. "The technology provides its owners with 70 percent more light on the road, increasing visibility of many peripheral objects left in the shadows by standard halogen lighting. XENON provides the best illumination available and is considered the benchmark against which other forward lighting technologies are measured."

According to OSRAM SYLVANIA, annual US sales of XENON equipped vehicles have well surpassed the one million mark. The full potential, however, based on car models for which XENON tooling has already been developed, puts this number at just under four million units. Establishing these sales would generate additional dealership revenue of approximately $500 per vehicle. At the same time, this will allow the manufacturers to better profit from their XENON tooling investments. As dealerships and manufactures benefit financially, consumers win through greater access to lighting technology that enhances safety.

"Repositioning XENON as a safety technology will allow these headlights to be applied to more mainstream vehicles. While dealerships prefer XENON to be sold as a stand alone option, the study confirms that if XENON is to be bundled, it belongs with other safety enhancing features," said Blewett. "When dealerships have XENON equipped vehicles on their lot, tools and trained personnel to promote them, informed customers will stand to benefit strongly. But the dealers need to initiate the conversation."

Mercedes-Benz Puts DRIVE YOUR FUTURE Scholarships Behind Students Who Are the First in Their Families to Go to College

Mercedes-Benz Puts DRIVE YOUR FUTURE Scholarships Behind Students Who Are the First in Their Families to Go to College

Over $3.5 Million Awarded to Nearly 1,000 College-bound Students to Date

MONTVALE, N.J., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today announced the names of 62 college-bound teenagers who will join the ranks of nearly 1,000 other students nationwide as recipients of Mercedes-Benz 's DRIVE YOUR FUTURE scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to students who are the first in their families to attend college and who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and a commitment to helping others. The DRIVE YOUR FUTURE Scholarship Program was developed by Mercedes-Benz USA in 2004 to help alleviate some of the financial pressures of first-generation college-bound students -- many of whom would be unable to pursue a post-secondary education due to the enormous financial burden.

In the competitive application process, nearly 5,000 students nationwide applied for scholarships, 62 of whom were selected based on academic performance, leadership, involvement in school and community activities and financial need. Each of the college-bound graduating high school seniors will receive a $10,000 scholarship ($2,500 per year over 4 years) to help offset rising college tuition costs.

This year Mercedes-Benz USA, with support from its dealers nationwide, will provide $620,000 in scholarship funding, raising the total amount granted since the program's launch in 2004 to $3.5 million to nearly 1,000 ambitious college-bound students. All of the DRIVE YOUR FUTURE award recipients are the first generation in their families to pursue a college education and many have overcome personal hardships due to underprivileged backgrounds.

"Ours is a brand that is founded on a commitment to nothing less than excellence and it has come to represent a dream fulfilled," said Ernst Lieb, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. "We want to encourage these students -- who are certainly among the best and the brightest of their generation -- to accept nothing less than the best, however they define that. We hope these scholarships can help remove some of the impediments so these young men and women can focus on accomplishing their dreams."

"According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average student loan debt for a bachelor's degree student is $19,300," said Barb Weber, assistant vice president of Scholarship America, the non-profit organization that administers the Mercedes-Benz DRIVE YOUR FUTURE program. "The importance of scholarship programs, such as the Mercedes-Benz DRIVE YOUR FUTURE program, is imperative in helping all students move forward with college enrollment and the completion of a college degree."

One of important components of the program is based on the principle of "paying it forward," or helping someone else in need. Each year, DRIVE YOUR FUTURE scholarship recipients are asked to serve as ambassadors of Mercedes- Benz USA philanthropy by giving back to their communities through activities such as mentoring/tutoring younger students, working with Boys and Girls Clubs or Big Brothers Big Sisters, among other activities. Nearly 1,000 students have benefited, or will benefit, from DRIVE YOUR FUTURE and will, in turn, give back in some way to help someone else achieve his/her dreams, reaching countless people in need.

The DRIVE YOUR FUTURE program was developed by Mercedes-Benz USA in collaboration with Scholarship America to respond to a critical need in the United States for scholarships to help students offset the costs of postsecondary education. DRIVE YOUR FUTURE is part of MBUSA's broader philanthropic initiative aimed at educating and empowering future generations by helping young people reach their full potential and become the leaders of their generation.

Committed to the communities in which employees live and work, MBUSA has also built alliances with a number of youth organizations across the country. The company supports many of these efforts through employee volunteer activities, mentoring and community outreach efforts. Philanthropic initiatives are reviewed and implemented through MBUSA corporate headquarters in Montvale, N.J., and through its regional offices around the country. For more information, interested students may visit http://www.mbusa.com/drivefuture.

The First Ever Car Customizing Retail Experience for Kids

The First Ever Car Customizing Retail Experience for Kids

Raceline Motorworks(TM) Set To Open 2nd Store!

CHICAGO, May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Children's store Raceline Motorworks(TM) is set to open its second store in Wauwatosa, WI (just outside of Milwaukee) this July! This comes on the heels of its first store, located in Westfield Shoppingtown, Hawthorn in Vernon Hills, which opened its doors on August 5th, 2006.

(Logo:

http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070531/CLTH066LOGO)

The first of its kind, the new concept stores offer kids a place where they can design, build, and race their very own remote-controlled car in a fun-filled environment where parents can feel just as good about the experience as their kids.

Raceline is also the only store to provide an in-store, on/off-road test- drive track for kids to put their customized vehicles to the test! The store features a showroom and assembly area where children get to choose their own car, select their own body styles, colors, decals and tires, and then build it with the help of the friendly Raceline Pit Crew(TM). Each child also walks out of the experience as an owner - with a driver's license (complete with photo) and a full membership in the Raceline Racers Club(TM)! Best of all, club members can come back and race on the Raceline Motorworks Speedway Track(TM) as much as they like!

Design

Racers can personalize their ride from over 100 different body styles and color combinations, from exotic sports cars to go-anywhere dune buggies. Next they choose custom wheels, rims and decals and head on over to the Raceline DMV(TM) for a personalized Raceline Pit Pass(TM). Here they receive their driver's license, complete with racer photo and membership to the Raceline Racers Club(TM).

Build

Next, a Pit Crew member delivers the parts from a fully stocked garage of parts and accessories. Racers sit down at one of the assembly tables and, with the help of the Pit Crew, build the car of their dreams!

Race

A trip over to the Raceline Motorworks Speedway Track offers an adrenaline pumpin' race on two different race tracks (off-road obstacle course or street course). They can rev their engine at the starting gate as the announcer shouts out "start your engines!"

Raceline Motorworks works in close partnership with architectural firm Gensler, a leading global design, planning and strategic consulting firm. The firm has had great success with high-profile retail clients including American Girl and Apple.

Back in 2002, the store idea was conceptualized and founders Blake Harper, Rocky Jones and David Domm launched Raceline Motorworks in 2005 with the goal of creating a totally personalized and interactive environment for kids. Witnessing a need for something different and cool for boys to do and each having a passion for remote control cars, they took that passion, formed a team, and the "race" began!

Raceline plans to open additional stores throughout the country in the coming years.
