A simplified explanation of a turbocharger would be to explain its function as a high performance air pump. The turbocharger is designed to increase the intake air charge pressure quickly while creating minimal exhaust back-pressure. A turbocharger compresses intake air to optimize combustion efficiency. Spinning the compressor is done through the force of exhaust gasses coming out of the cylinders. These gasses spin a turbine, which then spins the compressor wheel on the other side, sending compressed fresh air to the intake valves.Back-pressure drives the turbines well on the exhaust side which spins the impeller on the drive side to increase boost. To achieve this increased boost, the turbocharger uses the exhaust flow from the engine to spin a turbine, which in turn spins an air pump. The turbine in the turbocharger spins at speeds of up to 150,000 rotations per minute. Since the turbocharger is linked to the exhaust system the temperatures in the turbine, get hot. The turbocharger must be able to withstand the heat and high revolutions for the long haul.
Turbochargers offer a type of forced air induction system. They compress the air flowing into the engine. The advantage of compressing more air is that it lets the engine squeeze more air into a cylinder, and more air means that more fuel can also be added. Therefore, you get more power from each explosion in each cylinder. A turbocharged engine produces more power overall than the same engine without the turbocharger.
