Volkswagen's All-New Clean Diesel Jetta TDI Sets New Guinness World Record for Lowest Fuel Consumption at 58.82 MPG

Volkswagen's All-New Clean Diesel Jetta TDI Sets New Guinness World Record for Lowest Fuel Consumption at 58.82 MPG

The Taylors break Guinness World Record driving a stock clean diesel Jetta TDI*

HERNDON, Va., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The world's most fuel efficient couple, John and Helen Taylor, have broken the current world record for lowest fuel consumption across the 48 contiguous United States averaging 58.82 miles to the gallon. They ended their 20 day trip in West Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008. To help them break the world record, they drove the all-new, 50-state-compliant clean diesel Volkswagen Jetta TDI, fueled by Shell Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel under real world driving conditions, simply applying easy to use fuel saving tips and the latest efficient engine technology available for good clean diesel fun.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080929/CLM087 )

"We are very excited and grateful to have broken the current Guinness World Record for lowest fuel consumption across the 48 contiguous United States," said Helen Taylor. "We would like to thank Volkswagen for providing us their new clean diesel Jetta that helped us get another World Record and to Shell for supplying the diesel fuel."

The previous Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption on a nationwide drive was 51.58 miles per gallon and the Taylors broke it by setting a new record of 58.82 miles per gallon, a whopping 14 percent improvement. In 20 days, driving across 48 states the Taylors drove 9,419 miles, exceeding 60 mpg on several legs of the record-setting run, spending only 6.9 cents per mile (total was $653).

"The terrain was very diverse, the weather less than ideal, and the traffic heavy at rush hour and the VW Jetta TDI handled it all beautifully, showing its fuel efficiency and its fun-to-drive dynamic capability, just two of this vehicle's many attributes," said John Taylor. "The car efficiently helped us to drive to a fuel economy world record."

People were encouraged to e-mail the Taylors along the way at: fuelacademy@gmail.com with any questions they may have about the tour, the vehicle or about fuel economy tips and join their "Fan" page on Facebook.com. As of the end of the trip, more than 2,000 people have e-mailed the Taylors.

Approximately 12 official check-in and refueling stops across the country were included throughout the duration of the drive. The couple drove on a counter-clockwise route passing through: Washington D.C.; New York City, Rutland, Vermont; Toledo, Ohio; Des Moines, Iowa; Spearfish, S.D.; Missoula, Mont.; Winnemucca, Nev.; Santa Monica, Calif.; Durango, Colo.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mount Vernon, Ill.; Ponchatoula, La.; and, Beckley, W.V. Some of the fuel saving tips the Taylors advocate include: avoiding idling and higher speeds, minimizing vehicle drag and performing regular vehicle maintenance.

The Taylors have made a 26-year career out of driving economically and conducting workshops globally on fuel-efficient driving techniques. They have collected 82 world fuel economy and vehicle-related records from drives around the globe in Australia, Asia, South Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Via their Web site, the Taylors will be sharing their personal experiences on the road. For more information and regular reports from the road, visit www.fuelacademy.com and www.media.vw.com. For a complete list of fuel-saving driving tips, visit http://www.shell.com/us/fuelstretch.

Volkswagen of America, Inc.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. recently announced Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard equipment on all its 2009 vehicles. As a result, Volkswagen is one of the only original equipment manufacturers to offer an electronic stability control system on their entire product line - ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) deadline requiring vehicles in the 2012 model year to include stability control systems. Volkswagen's ESP technology works in conjunction with anti-lock brakes and helps reduce loss of control and rollovers to avoid crashes. NHTSA predicts nearly 10,000 lives could be saved each year if automakers included stability systems as standard equipment.

Toyota Donation to Support Environmental Leadership and Wilderness Education Programs at Yosemite National Park and the University of California, Merced

Toyota Donation to Support Environmental Leadership and Wilderness Education Programs at Yosemite National Park and the University of California, Merced

$600,000 and five Prius donated by Toyota to Yosemite National Park

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Toyota is providing more than $600,000 and five hybrid vehicles to Yosemite National Park to support a number of environmental education programs at Yosemite and the University of California, Merced, it was announced today.

"The development of environmental education programs is key to preserving our majestic national parks for future generations," said Bill Duff, Corporate Manager, Environmental Office, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "Toyota is proud to be part of this endeavor through our donation to The Yosemite Fund and Yosemite National Park."

The donation was facilitated through the park's nonprofit fundraising partner, The Yosemite Fund. The park will use Toyota's contribution to support the Yosemite Leadership Program (YLP), a partnership between Yosemite, UC Merced and California State Parks. The internship program provides students with work experience in a park, wilderness education, a living stipend and the opportunity for possible future employment with the park. In addition, Toyota funds are being used to refurbish cabins in the park to be used as dorms for the interns.

"We are grateful for Toyota's generous support of these key educational programs in Yosemite," said Mike Tollefson, Yosemite National Park Superintendent. "Toyota's grants, received through our partnership with the Yosemite Fund, ensure that parks and wild places remain relevant to future generations by providing access to higher learning and residential internships in one of America's flagship parks."

The Wilderness Center on the campus of UC Merced was established in part with funds from the Toyota donation. As the home base of the Yosemite Leadership Program, the Wilderness Center fosters a wilderness ethic among students, as well as assists students and faculty with planning for trips to Yosemite and other national parks and forests. Students staffing the center are also paid through a fund developed with Toyota's grant.

"Working as partners with the National Park Service, institutions of higher learning and nonprofits, Toyota's generous contribution advances leadership and education opportunities to protect and preserve Yosemite National Park," said Bob Hansen, president, The Yosemite Fund. "The breadth of their contributions provides the resources to inspire new generations to develop an interest in conservation, environmental management and a passion for the outdoors."

Toyota's donation will also be used to establish a two-week Executive Leadership Seminar in 2009 designed specifically for experienced professionals in park and protected area land management. Leaders from government, corporate, and non-profit sectors will focus on proactive approaches and strategic leadership for use in complex, real-world land management challenges. This course draws on the University of California's academic leadership, and pairs it with the unparalleled opportunity for field study and experiential learning in Yosemite National Park.

In addition to the monetary donation, Yosemite will receive five Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles, which will be used to support Yosemite's air quality, bear management, wilderness education, search and rescue and visitor services.

The donation to Yosemite National Park is part of a $5 million contribution from Toyota in support of five National Parks and the National Park Foundation to enhance environmental leadership and educational programs at parks around the country. The company is also donating 23 vehicles in total to the national parks.

New 'Smoke Pro(R)' Quickly Pinpoints Leaks in Car Systems, Enabling Technicians to Work More Quickly and Profitably

New 'Smoke Pro(R)' Quickly Pinpoints Leaks in Car Systems, Enabling Technicians to Work More Quickly and Profitably

ORANGE COUNTY, California, September 29/PRNewswire/ --

A breakthrough for the auto repair industry, Redline Detection, LLC
introduces the "Smoke Pro(R)," a diagnostic leak detector(TM) which enables
technicians to easily pinpoint leaks in vacuum, exhaust, fuel vapor recovery
(EVAP) and oil systems, as well as wind and water leaks, according to Zachary
Parker, president of Redline Detection.

"Auto technicians have historically spent hours locating leaks. When a
leak was found, the technicians were unable to confirm that the repair had
completely solved the car's problem," Parker explains. "With the Smoke
Pro(R), technicians can quickly determine precisely where the leaks are
located, and after repairing them, test that the car's systems are
successfully sealed. The savings in time and the accuracy of the work has
made our first auto technician customers feel this is the most important tool
in their shop."

The Smoke Pro(R) functions by puffing smoke into one of the car's sealed
systems, producing tell-tale wisps of smoke pinpointing the location of the
leak. After the leak is repaired, the technician uses the Smoke Pro(R)'s
pressure gauge to perform a decay test to confirm that the system holds
pressure, ensuring that the system is properly sealed.

"The Smoke Pro(R) uses pure mineral oil and simple shop air and is light
enough to hang from under the car hood," Parker adds. "The test only takes a
few minutes to detect all leaks in the system, even those of which the car
owners were unaware, resulting in an increased number of repairs and parts
sales for the service center. Our technicians find the Smoke Pro(R) pays for
itself within a month and continues to sharply increase repair centers' and
automobile dealers' profits."

According to Parker, many Redline customers state they make more money
from their Smoke Pro(R) than any other tool in their repair facility. The
Smoke Pro has a 100 percent safety record with a low temperature heating
element that assures reliability and safety.

"Most cars have leaks, regardless of their age. Having a Smoke Pro(R)
available to quickly diagnose a vehicle will create an opportunity for the
auto technician to do more work on cars that visit their service center or
dealership."

Hino Celebrates Grand Opening in West Virginia

Hino Celebrates Grand Opening in West Virginia

WILLIAMSTOWN, W.Va., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Hino Motors Manufacturing USA, Inc. (HMM), today celebrated the official Grand Opening of its commercial truck assembly facility in Williamstown. This facility is Hino's first wholly-owned truck assembly plant in the United States. Approximately 300 guests attended the event, which included an assembly line tour and display of several Hino trucks equipped for different customer uses. Elected and business leaders offered congratulatory remarks, including, West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin; Representative Alan Mollohan; Ambassador Motoatsu Sakurai, Consul General of Japan; and Shoji Kondo, Chairman of the Board of Hino Motors Ltd. (Japan). Senator Jay Rockefeller was scheduled to participate, but unexpectedly needed to be in Washington to participate in Senate consideration of economic recovery legislation.

"Hino Motors Manufacturing has established an important presence in Wood County and the Mid-Ohio Valley, and we're glad to have been a partner in that growth," said Governor Manchin. "We've watched Hino's rapid growth with pleasure and look forward to a long and mutually rewarding working partnership."

Senator Jay Rockefeller echoed similar praise from Washington. "I'm incredibly proud to have helped open the doors for Hino to come to West Virginia. It was a proud day for Wood County and our entire state when this company announced it was opening a facility here last year. Since that time, production has ramped up, approximately 1,000 trucks have rolled off the assembly line, and the hard working employees continue to impress and amaze every day. I congratulate Hino on today's grand opening, and I look forward to supporting its success in West Virginia for many years to come."

HMM-West Virginia assembles Class 4 to 7 commercial trucks. Customers use Hino Trucks for such purposes as residential/commercial moving, armored car service, beverage distribution, and wrecker service. The plant started production in November 2007, and today employs about 105 full-time Team Members. HMM has invested over $18,000,000 in the West Virginia facility, in the plant and equipment, to date.

"Hino very much appreciates the support it has received from the State and the surrounding local communities," noted parent company Chairman Kondo, who flew in from Tokyo specifically for the event. "Starting an operation with an empty building is a difficult task. We are fortunate to have good partners in government and the business community and, most importantly, a great group of Team Members."

Ceremony attendees also heard compelling, first-hand accounts from three Team Members of the positive impact that employment with HMM has had on their lives and families.

Hino announced several important contributions to the area community. Mr. Yasuo Tanigawa, President of HMM, presented a diesel truck engine to Washington State Community College, and a "practice training truck" to the Wood County Technical Center. Mr. Tanigawa explained that the intent of these contributions is to provide valuable education and skills training to local students -- a critical component of Hino's corporate social responsibility initiatives.

In addition to these donations, Chairman Kondo announced the establishment of a Hino college scholarship program. The scholarship will be awarded annually to four local high school seniors, in an amount up to one thousand dollars per year per student, for up to four academic years. The scholarship program will be administered by the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation.

At the close of the event, several of the dignitaries participated in a traditional ceremony of breaking the top of a sake keg, called Kagami Biraki, to symbolize "an opening to harmony and good fortune."

Baldor Electric Company Announces Real Estate Sale and Current Business Update

Baldor Electric Company Announces Real Estate Sale and Current Business Update

FORT SMITH, Ark., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Baldor Electric Company (NYSE:BEZ) markets, designs, and manufactures industrial electric motors, power transmission products, drives, and generators and is based in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Today, Baldor announced the recently completed sale of a distribution center in Tennessee, a transaction valued at $30 million. This sale follows the August acquisition of Poulies Maska, Inc., a complementary power transmission component business with annual revenues of approximately $33 million. A portion of the proceeds from the building sale were used to reduce the Company's debt balance.

John A. McFarland, Chairman and CEO, commented, "Debt reduction is a priority for Baldor. We will see a slight increase in our debt balance at the end of the third quarter due to the Maska acquisition; however, the sale of this property kept the increase to a minimum."

"As stated on July 24, we expect mid-single digit revenue growth throughout the second half of the year. Unfortunately, increasing raw material costs for all products and slower sales of the more profitable power transmission products have been greater challenges than expected during the quarter. The timing of our price increases and continued increased costs in the materials we buy will result in a decline in margin in the third quarter. Our largest raw material purchase, electrical steel, has increased in cost by more than 50% in the past six months. As a result, we expect diluted earnings per share in third quarter 2008 to be similar to that of third quarter 2007."

Baldor will release third quarter earnings after the market closes on October 23, 2008. Conference call information will be announced prior to that time.

This document contains statements that are forward-looking, i.e. not historical facts. The forward-looking statements contained in this document (including but not limited to "expect", "will" and "believe") are based on the Company's current expectations and some of them are subject to risks and uncertainties. Accordingly, you are cautioned that any such forward-looking statements are not guarantees of future performance and involve risks and uncertainties, and that actual results may differ materially from those projected in the forward-looking statements as a result of various factors. The factors that might cause such differences include, among others, the following: (i) changes in economic conditions, (ii) developments or new initiatives by our competitors in the markets in which we compete, (iii) fluctuations in the costs of select raw materials, (iv) the success in increasing sales and maintaining or improving the operating margins of the Company, and (v) other factors including those identified in the Company's filings made from time-to-time with the Securities and Exchange Commission. These statements should be read in conjunction with the Company's most recent annual report (as well as the Company's Form 10-K and other reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission) containing a discussion of the Company's business and of various factors that may affect it.

Bamberg, Germany, Deploys Federal Signal PIPS System

Bamberg, Germany, Deploys Federal Signal PIPS System

Video and analytics-based solution tackles traffic challenges of historic proportions

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bamberg, in the German State of Bavaria, is well known for its rich medieval heritage. A network of winding lanes, narrow alleyways, small cobblestone streets and more modern roads challenges some of the 300,000 residents and visitors that trek into historic Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, each year to enjoy its shopping, street cafes and pubs. City officials turned to Federal Signal for its PIPS automated number/license plate recognition (ALPR/ANPR) system to manage traffic in the historic Sand Quarter.

"We would often have large vehicles and tour buses enter into the area. Being unfamiliar with the roadways, one wrong turn could result in their vehicle being unable to maneuver a tight turn. This would quickly result in traffic congestion and gridlock, frustrating both tourists and businesses in the area. We had to find a solution," said Thomas Beese, head of the City of Bamberg's Department for Urban Redevelopment.

Despite the many roads inside the Bamberg World Heritage site, there are only two entry points available to those who enter the Sand Quarter. The Federal Signal PIPS ALPR video and analytics-based system reads the license plates of vehicles approaching the area and compares the license plates to the list of authorized vehicles maintained by the City.

"The target was the dream of all planners in historic cities: Optimal accessibility for authorized vehicles combined with minimization of disturbing unauthorized traffic. The system is working very effectively," said Beese. He concluded that reduced traffic in the World Heritage site makes it safer and easier for tourists to walk Bamberg's streets and enjoy the medieval and baroque atmosphere of the historic city.

"Our Federal Signal PIPS ALPR technology enables some of the world's largest intelligent traffic management systems for congestion management and charging, and we are delighted to help Bamberg's city leaders solve their traffic challenges, while they take progressive measures to preserve and protect their unique historic community," stated Michael K. Wons, vice president and general manager of Federal Signal's Public Safety Systems Division.

Pennsylvania State Police Initiative Aims to Reduce Crashes Involving Trucks on Section of Interstate 81

Pennsylvania State Police Initiative Aims to Reduce Crashes Involving Trucks on Section of Interstate 81

HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A busy stretch of Interstate 81 in Dauphin and Cumberland counties will be the focus of a new initiative launched today by the Pennsylvania State Police that aims to reduce accidents involving commercial trucks.

"The Ticket Aggressive Cars and Trucks initiative, or TACT, encourages safe driving behavior by those driving passenger cars and commercial vehicles," Acting State Police Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski said during a news conference at department headquarters.

The TACT initiative will focus on the 33-mile section of I-81 from the Newville Exit in Cumberland County to the intersection with I-83 in Dauphin County.

"We typically have a lot of trucks through this area and troopers have investigated more than 750 crashes involving commercial vehicles along I-81 in Cumberland and Dauphin counties since 2003," Pawlowski said.

TACT will use highway billboards, posters, safety awareness messages and brochures to educate drivers about the importance of sharing the road and steering clear of unsafe situations.

Joining Pawlowski for the event were Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator John Hill; James Runk, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association; and Scott Christie, PennDOT District 8 executive.

"Many passenger car drivers don't know a truck's limitations in terms of maneuverability, stopping distances and blind spots," Pawlowski said. "Driving around large trucks requires extra care."

As part of the initiative, Pawlowski said state police will aggressively look for violations that, historically, have contributed to crashes involving commercial vehicles. Those violations, he said, include speeding, following too closely, reckless driving, and unsafe lane changes.

State police will use marked and unmarked patrol vehicles and fixed-wing aircraft as part of the enforcement effort. In addition, motor carrier enforcement teams will conduct truck inspections to look for faulty equipment, overweight vehicles and fatigued drivers.

Pawlowski said the initiative is funded primarily by grant money from the Federal Motor Carrier Assistance Administration obtained through PennDOT.

Petit Le Mans Green Challenge Represents Milestone for SAE International Members

Petit Le Mans Green Challenge Represents Milestone for SAE International Members

WARRENDALE, Pa., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A landmark event that represents years of commitment by SAE International members will come to fruition when the circular-shaped trophy representing sustainability is awarded Saturday night at the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) Petit Le Mans Green Challenge.

The Petit Le Mans Powered by the Totally New Mazda6, set for Road Atlanta, will be the first motorsports event to use the Green Racing Protocols developed by SAE International, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and ALMS.

The overall inspiration was developed almost five years ago by a group of SAE International members, led by noted auto-racing executive Herb Fishel. In 2006, DOE, the EPA and SAE International automotive-industry leader-members formed the Green Racing Working Group to further develop the program. Then, at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the American Le Mans Series announced it would become the first sanctioning body to put the environmentally focused competition on track.

Essentially, the new competition encourages manufacturers to introduce and develop "green" technologies and promote them through auto racing.

"While many industries are involved in 'green' concepts, SAE International views auto racing as one of the most viable avenues to educate the public about alternative fuels and cutting-edge technology," said David L. Amati, SAE International director of Global Automotive Business. "As a global sport, auto racing is second only to soccer in popularity. The global aspect is integral, as the automotive industry worldwide is seeking to balance transportation needs with energy concerns through technical innovation."

"The auto manufacturers competing in the American Le Mans Series have demanded this type of initiative," said Scott Atherton, ALMS president and CEO. "The platform goes a long way to restore auto-racing's relevance in promoting the progressive technology of its auto manufacturers to consumers."

SAE International is a global association of 115,000 engineers and related technical experts in the automotive, aerospace and commercial-vehicle industries. SAE International's core competencies are life-long learning and standards development. SAE International's charitable arm is the SAE Foundation, which supports many programs, including A World in Motion(R) and the Collegiate Design Series.

Spartan Chassis Announces Multiple Orders for Mine-Protected Variant Vehicles

Spartan Chassis Announces Multiple Orders for Mine-Protected Variant Vehicles

Now Supplying More Than 20 Threat-Specific Variants for U.S. and Allies

CHARLOTTE, Mich., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Spartan Chassis, a unit of Spartan Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPAR), said it has received multiple, small specialized orders for new MRAP variant products, an indication of the possibilities for the highly successful mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle program.

Spartan said it is now supplying more than 20 threat-specific variants of mine-protected vehicles for the U.S. military and a growing number of allied militaries, including those of Great Britain, Italy, Canada, Iraq and Yemen. These mine-protected variants of MRAPs -- which include ordnance disposal, ground ambulance, recovery vehicles and specially outfitted vehicles for Special Forces units -- are enabling troops to perform a far greater range of activities while benefiting from the unique life-saving attributes of the V-shaped, blast-protected hull.

"Unfortunately, improvised explosive devices -- IEDs -- continue to increase in popularity as a weapon of choice, and the data indicates growing use worldwide," said John Sztykiel, president and CEO of Spartan Motors. "Faced with this threat, the U.S. military is increasingly drawing on our team's expertise and that of our OEM partners to produce threat-specific, even one-off MRAP variants. These vehicles must perform specialized, mission-critical tasks such as supporting Special Forces operations, executing ordnance removal and disposal or extracting injured soldiers in a mine-protected ambulance configuration. It is an honor for Spartan Chassis to be the go-to company in assisting with the rapid creation and production of these threat-specific vehicles."

Spartan has become a leading, critical supplier of a broad array of mine-protected vehicle models, including:

-- MRAP and MRAP-Plus vehicles, including Cougar and RG-33
-- Iraqi Light Armored Vehicle (ILAV) for allied Iraqi Security Forces
-- Yemen Light Armored Vehicle (YLAV) for Yemeni Military
-- Joint Explosive Ordnance Disposal Rapid Response Vehicles (JERRV)
-- Mine Resistant Recovery and Maintenance Vehicles (MRRMV)
-- Heavy Armored Ground Ambulances (HAGA)
-- Special Operations Command vehicles (SOCOM)
-- Mastiff MRAP for the United Kingdom
-- MRAP variants for Italy and Canada
-- TLAV -- Mine-protected training vehicle for the U.S. Navy and the Joint
Improvised Explosive Device Defense Organization

MRAP vehicles are a family of heavily armored fighting vehicles specially designed to survive deadly IED (improvised explosive device) attacks, which have been responsible for 60 percent of all U.S. casualties in Iraq, and are a growing problem in Afghanistan and other hot spots of the global war on terror. The vehicles are defined by their innovative, V-shaped hulls, which deflect explosive forces originating below the vehicle -- a point of weakness for non-MRAP military vehicles, such as Humvees.

"As mine-protected vehicles continue to evolve to meet emerging threats, Spartan's expertise in rapid automotive engineering, speed-to-market and custom production positions us to meet future design reset requirements -- and sustain these variant programs with parts and service in the field," added Sztykiel. "Product and safety innovation are historical strengths of Spartan Chassis stemming from our 30-year heritage protecting emergency-rescue first responders, and we expect our capabilities to play an important role in the success of the military's next generation of tactical wheeled vehicles."

Since 2005, Spartan has invested about $16 million in facilities and equipment for military production. Spartan has shared its military-related work with 100 Michigan-based companies, helping to employ 6,400 Michigan workers and spending $148.4 million with these companies in 2007 alone.

About Spartan Chassis, Inc.

Spartan Chassis, Inc., a subsidiary of Spartan Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPAR), is a leading developer and manufacturer of custom chassis for recreational vehicles, fire trucks and specialty vehicles. Spartan Motors ( www.spartanmotors.com ) which also manufactures emergency rescue vehicles under the brand names of Crimson Fire, Crimson Fire Aerials and Road Rescue, reported sales of $681.9 million in 2007 and is focused on becoming the premier manufacturer of specialty vehicles and chassis in North America.

Timing and Scoring System Using RFID Tags Obsoletes Traditional Transponders

Timing and Scoring System Using RFID Tags Obsoletes Traditional Transponders

FERNLEY, Nev., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Zoomius Inc. today announced the success of the first race weekend run completely with its revolutionary RFID timing and scoring system.

A combined Z2/USGPRU motorcycle race weekend at the Reno-Fernley circuit near Reno, Nevada on the weekend of August 23-24th featured the first use of the Zoomius TITAN RFID timing and scoring system to manage a complete race event.

The event combined practice sessions, qualifying sessions, sprint races and an endurance race, all of which were completely managed, timed and scored by the Zoomius TITAN RFID race management system. Live timing and scoring, results and lap-times were available to all racers with a wi-fi enabled computer.

"The race weekend was a complete success," said Chris Keane, CEO of Zoomius Inc. "Our long-term research and development has paid off with a great result. Our receivers at start/finish, pit-in and pit-out gave everyone -- staff and racers alike -- a complete and accurate picture of everything that was happening at any moment."

RFID tags are low-cost, disposable labels that significantly reduce the cost of outfitting each vehicle. The entry list for the Z2/USGPRU weekend featured just under one hundred motorcycles, which were completely outfitted with tags for less than $40 -- less than one thousandth of the cost of outfitting all vehicles with traditional powered transponders.

Zoomius' patent-pending RFID timing system has been in development for several years and has solved significant problems yet to be discovered by other companies who have recently made forays into RFID timing systems.

"There have been huge hurdles to overcome since we began development in 2002. Our latest technology has shown no problem reliably scoring vehicles traveling in excess of 180 mph and in large clusters such as at the start of a race," continued Keane. "Actually, 180 mph isn't a limit of our RFID system; we just can't get our bikes to go faster on the front straight at Reno-Fernley."

The first successful race weekend has demonstrated that RFID timing and scoring is more than just an interesting concept and that the technology is primed for widespread acceptance into the racing community. The system is portable, easy to set up and fully integrated with the industry-leading TIGER registration management software from Zoomius.

The system works equally well for motorcycles and cars.

Ford Selects Three Latina Breast Cancer Survivors for National Education Awareness Campaign

Ford Selects Three Latina Breast Cancer Survivors for National Education Awareness Campaign

- Three Hispanic breast cancer survivors honored by Ford for their courageous battle against breast cancer and their inspiration to others in the community.

- A 14-year national sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure(R), Ford has dedicated more than $95 million in cash and in-kind donations to save lives and end breast cancer.

- Ford renews its commitment for the cause and continues to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure with the 2008 Warriors in Pink collection - an extensive collection of apparel and accessories for women, men, and children available at www.fordcares.com and www.fordenespanol.com/saluddelseno.

DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- To continue raising awareness about early detection and prevention of breast cancer, Ford with its Warriors in Pink program is teaming up with Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R) to honor three Hispanic women for being examples of true warriors.

The Ford Warriors in Pink campaign recognizes special women whose strength and courage allowed them to overcome the fight against breast cancer and are now helping other women in their communities do the same.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most frequent cancer affecting Hispanic women, and yet they are least likely to solicit and obtain medical information about breast cancer among women in all ethnic groups.

This year Ford is honored to recognize three Hispanic women -- Itzel Diaz from Miami; Rosa Garcia-Viteri from Los Angeles and Alma Horvath from Dallas. After battling breast cancer, these women are now dedicated to providing support to other breast cancer survivors and raising awareness about the importance of early detection.

"Cancer has done two things for me. It has given me the opportunity to make life better each time it has challenged me, and it has emphasized the need and responsibility I have to share my story to help others and spread public awareness," said Rosa Garcia-Viteri, Los Angeles' Warrior in Pink. "I'm a 56 year-old female who has fought five separate battles of breast cancer and survived for 24 years. By using myself as an example, it gives people hope that it can be done!"

The Warriors in Pink campaign is meant to empower women to have a brave heart and a determined soul, to fight like a warrior for the day when our world no longer loses our loved ones to breast cancer. Whether through a long-time survivor, someone who is currently fighting the disease or someone who understands the urgency to eliminate this threat, Ford wants to show that there is a warrior within all women, men and children.

Embarking on its 14th year of support for Komen for the Cure, the leader of the breast cancer movement, Ford has dedicated more than $95 million in cash and in-kind donations to save lives and end breast cancer. In honor of this year's three Hispanic warriors, Ford will donate $1,000 in each of their names to their local affiliate of Komen for the Cure.

"We are pleased that Ford is continuing its commitment to Komen and recognizing Hispanic Warriors in our communities for the second year in a row," said Katrina McGhee, vice president of marketing for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "We hope that these true Warriors in Pink continue to offer their support and encouragement to women battling breast cancer and that together we can find the cures for this disease.

In addition to the donation to Komen on behalf of the Hispanic Warriors, Ford continues to drum up support for the organization through the sale of its popular and trendy Warriors in Pink collection, which features apparel and accessories for women and men with important symbols signifying the message of hope, strength and unity in the commitment to fight against breast cancer.

This year, the line has grown with the addition of practical items such as travel tumblers, key chains and license plate frames as well as new designs in their apparel collection.

All apparel and accessories are available on www.fordenespanol.com/saluddelseno, and 100 percent of net proceeds will be donated to Komen for the Cure. Last year, the line of apparel generated more than $1 million in sales, with all net proceeds going to Komen for the Cure.

Those in the market for a new car can also support the cause as Ford has introduced the 2009 Ford Mustang with the Warriors in Pink package. The limited-edition package includes custom floor mats, pink stitching on leather seats and the steering wheels and the breast cancer emblem on the front of the car among other special features. Ford will donate to Komen $500 for every 2009 Warriors in Pink Mustang sold.

"We are so proud to be able to recognize Hispanic warriors in our communities again this year. These courageous women really inspire others to muster the strength to fight breast cancer and also spread the word about the importance of early detection," said Connie Fontaine, Brand Content and Alliances Manager for Ford Motor Company. "With the recognition of our warriors and our 2008 Warriors in Pink apparel collection, we hope to have yet another successful year of increasing awareness and support for breast cancer."

Fast Online Auto Insurance Quote Comparisons Offered By OnlineAutoInsurance.com

Fast Online Auto Insurance Quote Comparisons Offered By OnlineAutoInsurance.com

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The lengthy process of comparing rates is now a thing of the past. http://www.onlineautoinsurance.com/ offers Americans the ability to instantly and efficiently complete an online auto insurance comparison from a variety of leading insurers such as Progressive, Unitrin, Infinity and GMAC among other recognizable brand names.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20080311/CLTU015LOGO)

The purpose of quote comparisons is to ensure competitive rates for the coverage desired, since the exact same protection may be priced differently within each company. Among the most commonly provided pieces of advice offered by professionals for maintaining low premiums is obtaining a few different quotes to better increase the chances of finding suitable coverage with premiums that fall within a given budget.

A website operated by a licensed broker, http://www.onlineautoinsurance.com/ connects consumers with an array of carriers by hosting a single set of questions and electronically returning a fast premium quote from multiple companies. This is possible through time-reducing online technology which eliminates the need of repeatedly completing questionnaires or making several telephone calls to gather a variety of options.

Based on rating factors and state laws, visitors may have the option of purchasing their policy online by signing applications electronically, replacing the ink signature. This gives policyholders the ability to insure vehicles without the need of driving to a local office location. In 2008, the World Wide Web has become a large source of policy issuance and indicates growth with each subsequent year.

Scarlett Zavala, website conversion analyst states, "A factor deterring a significant percentage of US consumers from going online to satisfy their insuring needs is information security. As we tighten up security features, we are seeing an increase in consumer confidence resulting in higher Internet usage to fulfill such needs."

With the use of a secure form, site visitors can be more confident that their information is secure. Additionally, for the purpose of rate comparisons, driver's license or social security numbers are not required although such data may be optionally provided for increased accuracy in auto insurance quotations.

The findings are important because State Farm Claims data from the past five years show that October averages the highest number of teen auto insurance claims. According to State Farm, the nation's largest auto insurer, an increase in the number of 16- and 17-year-old driver claims* involving injury or collision can be expected to jump nearly 20 percent in October as compared to other months.

Key findings from the parent survey show that in many instances the majority of parents are not following the safe driving advice they give to their teens, possibly setting dangerous examples for young, inexperienced drivers:

-- 65 percent of parents talk on cell phones at least sometimes while driving; however 94 percent restrict their teens from doing the same

-- 68 percent of parents are in a hurry at least sometimes when they drive
-- 65 percent of parents drive when they are tired at least sometimes

The parent survey is a follow-up to the 2007 National Young Driver Survey, conducted by State Farm and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia(R) (CHOP), which examined driving through the eyes of teens and found that they drive under dangerous conditions -- while fatigued, talking on cell phones, and with multiple passengers. More specifically:

-- 89 percent of teens said they see their peers talking on cell phones while driving at least sometimes (1)

-- 91 percent of teens see their peers driving in a hurry at least sometimes (2)

-- 75 percent of teens said they see their peers drive when they are tired at least sometimes (3)

"We are asking parents to be aware that their teens are watching and learning from their behaviors," said Laurette Stiles, vice president of Strategic Resources for State Farm. "State Farm is committed to working with parents to ensure their teens develop safe, smart driving behaviors. We will again join Congress in support of National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 19- 25, to encourage parents, as well as young drivers, lawmakers and educators to work together to change risky driving behaviors and help save lives."

The parent survey also found that parents would have liked more information or advice on teaching their teens to drive. For example:

-- Half of parents would have liked more information on helping their teens avoid distractions

-- One out of three could have used more advice on freeway driving, nighttime driving and road rage

-- One fourth would have liked information on ways to help their teen avoid drinking and driving

To ensure parents are equipped with the right tips and tools as they assist their teens with learning to drive, State Farm created an interactive Facebook(R) page devoted to teen driver safety. Parents who join the page can learn ways to help their teens navigate the road and share safe driving tips with other parents. Parents can go to Facebook for more details about the teen driver safety page.

About the Parent and National Young Driver Surveys

State Farm is in its third year of a multi-year research initiative focusing on teen drivers. The 2007 National Young Driver Survey, conducted by State Farm and CHOP, is the most comprehensive study of teen attitudes and behaviors as passengers and drivers to date. Nearly 6,000 students in 68 high schools throughout the U.S. were surveyed on what they do and see other teens do behind the wheel.

State Farm's parent survey, conducted in June 2008, provided insights into how parents participate in the teen driver education process and influence their teens' driving behaviors. More than 1,000 parents or guardians of teens who have passed behind-the-wheel driving tests within the past year (June 2007-May 2008) were surveyed.

State Farm has a strong legacy of conducting research to save lives on the road. For more than 10 years, State Farm and CHOP conducted child passenger safety research and used their findings to identify the proper seating and restraining methods for children in vehicles. Today, State Farm is focused on the most vulnerable group on the road -- teens.
