Few things are as devastating to a diesel engine's performance as the sudden breakdown of the coolant pump. A Water pump failure can quickly lead to many other problems, all of which are costly to repair. A faulty water pump can cause complete engine failure. That reason alone should be enough to only purchase a water pump from a premium OEM-quality manufacturer.

What are the Warning Signs your 3.0L Eco Diesel water pump is on the way out?

  • If you discover a puddle of engine coolant underneath your vehicle, this could signify the water pump is leaking coolant. Leaking engine coolant is a sign of one or more of the following conditions:
  • If your water pump has been over-tightened, this leads to deformation of the pump's mounting surface, which leads to a gap.
  • A bad water pump bearing can also happen with a faulty installation.
  • Damage to the pump's body, such as a fracture occurring during installation or shipping, will cause your cooling system pump to fail.
  • Water pump failure can also be caused by damage occurring to the bearing seals. When coolant contaminants compromise the bearing seal on the water pump, a new water pump is not far off.
  • If your engine coolant has changed color and now appears clouded or dirty from suspended debris, this is a sign that the engine's cooling fluid is contaminated. Contaminated coolant will adversely affect the entire cooling system's performance.
  • Your engine's coolant seeps through the weep hole. Whi e some seepage occurs on new water pumps while breaking in, excess dripping signifies contaminated fluid and impending water pump failure.
  • Coolant leaks need to be addressed as a priority. Failure to fix the leaking coolant will lead to overheating and a costly repair charge. A faulty water pump can cause complete engine failure. This is the main reason why purchasing an OEM Mopar part with a Two-Year Warranty is well worth the expense. The reason alone should be enough to buy a water pump only from a premium OEM-quality manufacturer.
  • Grinding noise or unusual noise can indicate a few different water pump warning signs of an impending failure.
  • A damaged bearing seal will slowly dissolve the protective layer surrounding the seal and allow coolant loss. The loss of engine coolant causes your engine to overheat and eventually collapse.
  • A defective impeller can come loose from its shaft. The impeller distributes coolant throughout the system; if it were to detach, overheating would occur.
  • If your engine is overheating, it could be related to a failing water pump. A failing water pump causes your engine to heat up, and that's not good. To prevent catastrophic engine failure, look for these signs of an overheated engine due to water pump failure.
  • A check engine light caused by an overheated coolant condition will trigger the dreaded check engine light, which means it's time to pull over immediately.
  • Abnormal temperature gauge readings are another sign of trouble. Typically, your vehicle's temperature gauge should remain steady, settling somewhere between cold and hot. If coolant isn't getting pumped through the system, the impeller has most likely malfunctioned, causing the temperature gauge needle to go up.

Few things are as devastating to a diesel engine's performance as the sudden breakdown of the coolant pump. Water pump failure can quickly lead to many other problems, all of which are costly to repair.

KLM Performance Water Pump Tech Tip:  The 3.0L V6 Eco Diesel Owners are replacing water pumps because of a coolant leak. The 3.0L has known Water Pump issues where the OEM Water Pump is found to have a pinched bypass o-ring. This pinched O-ring can be the cause of the coolant leak. We strongly recommend this inspection of the By-Pass O-Ring prior to purchasing a new Water Pump.  We offer the Mopar 68147586AA O Ring Kit as a separate item if you want to attempt to fix the water pump leaking issue on your 3.0L Eco Diesel.

I ordered this Chrysler OEM-Engine Water Pump 68211202AB and had it in two days. Far less expensive than the dealer.

Cheaper to do it right the fisrt time.

I learned the hard way what happens when you purchase a lower-quality unit. I purchased a crown water pump, and it lasted almost three weeks. I installed the Mopar replacement water pump, and my coolant issues are now resolved. I recommend you buy the Mopar pump and keep the engine cool again.
