When the spring in the original cap gets worn out the engine cooling system is not functioning at its full potential. A failed Degas Bottle Cap has to lead many Ford Powerstroke owners to believe their head gaskets have failed. A malfunctioning coolant cap / degas bottle cap will allow your coolant to boil before the engagement of the cooling fan. If the degas bottle is leaking, you will see a white residue below the cap as it dries. This white residue is from the evaporated coolant.

The new Ford 9C3Z8101B Degas Bottle Cap Stops Leaks in the Degas bottle itself from a weak cap or imperfections with sealing that present a white residue on the exterior of the degas bottle. A cheap and easy solution is to replace the Degas Bottle Cap with the new Ford Updated Degas Bottle Cap and see if this solves this issue. The Ford Degas Bottle Cap - Replacement Coolant Cap is an OEM Ford Part.

NOTE: After replacing the Ford 9C3Z-8101-B Degas Bottle Cap / Radiator Cap you should only fill to the MIN - minimum line on the coolant bottle when cold.

This New Updated Ford 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L. 6.7L Powerstroke Replacement Degas Bottle Cap solves another Powerstroke issue!

  • FAQ: Why do I have Coolant leaking From the Degas Bottle Cap on my Powerstroke engine?  The PowerStroke engines may exhibit coolant loss, low coolant, or coolant blowing out of the degas bottle as a direct result of excess coolant levels. Check that the coolant level is not too high and the expulsion is not due to normal expansion. The coolant level in the bottle at normal operating temperature should be at the Minimum level mark on the coolant reservoir bottle.  Your coolant degas bottle cap should be checked to see if it is capable of holding 16 PSI for the proper seal on the coolant bottle. Pressure test the cooling system to verify there are no leaks. Note: It is advised to either disconnect the right exhaust manifold from the right side turbo Y-pipe, or to raise the rear of the vehicle and remove the EGR valve to check for an EGR cooler leak. Failure to do so may result in a hydraulically-locked cylinder. Repair any leaks as necessary. Inspect the coolant for oil, which would indicate a leaking oil cooler. Check the engine oil sensor reading against the coolant temp sensor. An EOT that is 25 degrees higher may indicate a failed oil cooler. On Econolines, if the engine oil cooler is replaced, the heater core inlet hose should be replaced with part 5C2Z-18472-AA, which includes an internal restrictor. If the oil is present in the cooling system, the system will have to be cleaned. Flush the system afterward with clean water.
If engine coolant expulsion occurs under high load conditions, suspect head gaskets that are leaking compression into the cooling system. It may be necessary to test drive the truck with a pressure gauge TEE'd into a hose and the cooling system sealed so it will not vent to verify over-pressure. When replacing the head gaskets, it is necessary to install new head bolts. There is a revised torque sequence and specification for the head bolts. The head gasket kits have been revised to include parts needed in the service, but the gaskets themselves are not updated.
