FAQ: How do I know the current engine damper is bad?
There is no way to visually inspect it unless it is wobbling, and then you may have bigger issues. The other telltale symptoms of a bad damper are loose nuts and bolts, thrown belts, increased wear on the drive belts, excessive vibrations in the mirrors and increased driver fatigue.
What actually causes the damper to fail?
There is a liquid silicone in the OEM damper that just goes bad due to high miles or the constant heat cycles. This liquid silicone over time hardens and essentially stops the Damper from doing its job.
What is the recommended engine crankshaft damper change interval?
On the Cummins engines, they recommend changing the Damper out every 300,000 to 500,000 miles.
