What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF?

DEF or Diesel Exhaust Fluid is an ammonia-based liquid that is injected into the exhaust systems particulate filter as a catalyst to create a chemical reaction that breaks down the Nitrogen Oxide or NOx into nitrogen, water, and small amounts of CO2.  DEF - Diesel Exhaust Fluid - Urea Fluid is a non-toxic solution of 67.5% water and 32.5% automotive grade urea. This Fleetguard part number UF101 is one of the key elements of the SCR Selective Catalytic Reduction after-treatment system intended to reduce NOx from the exhaust gases produced by combustion. The engine SCR system is installed with a DEF filter to ensure it is free of contaminants.

What happens when I don't change my engine's, DEF Filter?

If you have overlooked the suggested maintenance interval on the DEF and trouble soon appears. It's time to change the DEF fluid filter. There are contaminants present in the UREA so a clean functional filter is vital. The DEF filter or Urea Filter will get restricted and send codes and, in some cases, become an operational issue. As a result, there are OEM-recommended filter change intervals should be followed accordingly. If these conditions are presented, the answer is a replacement of the DEF filter. If DEF is not properly filtered, urea crystals and other contaminants gained during transport and storage can cause the SCR system to malfunction or not work properly.
